Partnerships with Science Outreach Organizations

Science Education Academy

When: October-May, Saturday mornings
Who: Grad students and other science professionals and West Philadelphia students in grades 2-5

Ernest E. Just Biomedical Society is an active partner and supporter of Science Education Academy (SEA), a non-profit organization that brings together science professionals and elementary school students from West Philadelphia. Volunteers guide small groups of students through hands-on science modules covering a range of topics including natural, life and physical sciences. The ultimate goal of SEA is to encourage interest in the sciences in an underserved population and strengthen students’ observational and critical thinking skills. This partnership is also beneficial to graduate students who can develop their science communication skills and engage with the surrounding community.

Spark!

When:  Spark Lab sessions in the fall. Schedule online. After being matched in December, mentors will meet with mentees for 2 hours/week for 8 weeks in the spring.
Who: Grad students and science professionals and 7th-8th grade students

Spark engages underserved students with “apprenticeships” with professionals with individual mentor-mentee relationships. Students design and execute projects with mentor guidance, build communication and critical thinking skills and have opportunities for career exploration.  

Upward Bound Math and Science

Who:  Grad students and science professionals and high school students in the Upward Bound program

The Upward Bound Math and Science Program enrolls high school students who receive dedicated mentorship, supplemental STEM instruction and college preparation. Ernest E. Just members volunteer to lead journal clubs on current topics/issues in science.

Forensic Science Mentoring Institute

Who:  Grad students and science professionals and high school students in the G. John DiGregoria Summer Science Program

Students perform full time original research for 8 weeks at the Forensic Sciences Mentoring Institute in Willow Grove, PA. The program prepares students in laboratory safety and practice and introduces them to laboratory skills and analytical chemistry. Students present their original research projects at Thomas Jefferson University.  Ernest E. Just members have served as panelists speaking about graduate school and careers in science and given campus/lab tours to students in the program.

Philadelphia Science Festival

The Philadelphia Science Festival is a week long celebration of science held throughout the city featuring lectures, debates,  and other science programming for all ages. EE Just members presented a hands-on activity at the Franklin Institute to demonstrate how vaccines confer protection against pathogens.

Community Service Events

Ronald McDonald House Guest Chefs

When:  Ernest E. Just typically volunteers at least once a year

The Ronald McDonald house provides support in numerous ways to families of children who are patients at hospitals in the city, including The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Services include lodging, transportation and home-cooked meals prepared by volunteers. Ernest E. Just Biomedical Society members have served as Guest Chefs preparing scrumptious breakfasts featuring our signature item; cornmeal pancakes.

Philly Spring Clean Up

Who: The Philadelphia Streets Department                                            When:  April

Each year, the Philadelphia Streets Department organizes hundreds of projects to keep the city clean and tidy.  EE Just has participated and worked alongside volunteers from a variety of backgrounds and interests towards the common goal of beautifying our community. Last year 14,225 volunteers removed 970,940 pounds of trash and recycled 29,940 of material! They also cleaned 14 parks and recreation centers. All supplies are distributed by project leaders at the site.

Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service

Who: City Year Greater Philadelphia                                                       When: 3rd Monday in January

City Year Greater Philadelphia is an education-based AmeriCorps program focused on ending the high school drop out crisis. Each year City Year Greater Philadelphia hostsa service projectduring Martin Luther King Day with the intent of creating colorful, inspiring and harmonious educational spaces for public school students in Philadelphia's. Alongside other community partners, EE Just members helped transform a school by painting murals and doing light construction work.
